The Fellowship of Learning: Adventures in Education at Lorien Wood

When the World Feels Heavy

There are moments when the brokenness of our world presses so close that we cannot ignore it. News of violence, injustice, or suffering shakes us, and our hearts ache with grief, fear, and longing for things to be made right. In those moments, we stop. We pray. We remember that “the Spirit helps us in our weakness… intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words” (Romans 8:26). We hold fast to the truth that God hears the cries of His people and comforts those who mourn.

What, then, do we do when the weight of the world feels heavy? We humble ourselves and seek the Lord. We pray for perspective, for healing, for comfort, and for strength--not only for those directly affected by tragedy, but for our own community, our city, our nation, and our world. We acknowledge our dependence on Jesus Christ, who alone can save and bring peace in the midst of chaos.

At Lorien Wood, our calling is to outfit a stalwart and faithful fellowship for a noble adventure. This mission does not pause when tragedy strikes. Rather, it shapes our response. Each day we continue in the work the Lord has given us: to love your children, to shepherd them, to laugh and learn alongside them, to hide God’s Word in their hearts, and to provide a safe and joyful place for them to grow. We remain vigilant, but not fearful; wise, but not anxious. Parents who serve on campus join us in this watchful care, and together we trust the Lord with the precious ones He has entrusted to us.

It is natural, especially as parents, to feel waves of worry or a strong desire to hold our children close when the world feels uncertain. Those feelings are real, and we acknowledge them together. Yet we also choose to lay our fears at the feet of Jesus. We entrust Him with our children and our future, resting in His promises. As Isaiah reminds us: “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock” (Isaiah 26:3–4).

So we carry on, faithfully and joyfully, in the corner of the world God has placed us. We teach, we pray, we explore, we serve. And we do so with confidence that our hope is secure, our calling is sure, and our Savior is near. Together, let us keep our eyes fixed on Him: the source of wisdom, courage, and resilience. Let us be marked as a community who walks forward in hope, courageously equipped for the noble adventure laid before us.
